When you rent a car in Slovakia, you will need to drive on the right-hand side of the road, overtaking on the left. It is mandatory for you to wear a seatbelt in the car and to keep your headlights on low beam at all times. There is also a zero-tolerance policy on driving under the influence in the country. Additionally, the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited. You must always remember to give priority to traffic on the right. If you are planning to drive on the highways, it is necessary to have a toll sticker (vignette), which can be purchased at post offices and petrol stations for 10 € ($11.22) for a 10-day vignette.
If you want to rent a car in Slovakia, the minimum age for drivers is 21; however, this can vary depending on the car’s category. For example, some car classes have a maximum rental age of 70 years old. To those drivers under 25 years old, they may incur a young driver surcharge. If you are a non-EU driver, you must present a valid driver’s license along with your passport to the car hire agency. When driving, you must carry at all times a valid driver’s license, insurance, and registration documents.
You will find that the average price of petrol is 1.42 € ($1.60) per liter or $6.05 per gallon, when you rent a car in Slovakia. You will find most petrol stations located along the main highways and major towns; however, in Bratislava there are very few petrol stations. Most petrol stations in the country are self-service and stay open for 24h, seven days a week.
Before you drive in Slovakia, you will need to know the national speed limits. In urban areas the speed limit is 60 km/h (37 mph). When you drive on the highway, there is a minimum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) and a maximum speed limit of 128 km/h (80 mph). The minimum speed for country roads is 65 km/h (40 mph), while the maximum speed you can drive is 88 km/h (55 mph).
