With its crescent-shaped, golden-sand beaches, Poipu Beach is popular with families who can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, wading, and boogie-boarding in the calm waters. The small waves and playground at the beach make it an especially nice beach for young children. Koa Kea Hotel & Resort is a full-service resort that rents water-sports equipment such as canoes, surfboards, and paddleboards. Families can also enjoy traditional Hawaiian activities such as hula lessons and nightly tiki torch lighting rituals.
Waves along Kauai’s south shore are the biggest in May to October, making these the best months for surfing near Koloa (although you’ll find consistent swells year-round). Kalapaki Beach is one of the best area beaches for surfers. The Royal Sonesta Kaua'i Resort Lihue is a full-service resort directly on this beach, while the Koloa Landing Resort is an option in Koloa, only about 15 miles from Kalapaki Beach. Loloa Landing even has its own surf school for those vacationers who are stoked about learning how to hang ten.
Mahaulepu Heritage Trail is a scenic pathway that winds along the coast from Shipwreck Beach to Mahaulepu Beach, passing through rugged and undeveloped terrain past caves, rocky inlets, and sand-dune cliffs. Hikers can spend time beachcombing and even whale watching along the way. Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa at Shipwreck Beach is a full-service resort that features multiple pools and a lazy river, and a concierge service to arrange local excursions.
The area around Koloa may be known for its beaches and water sports, but there is a lot to do in the surrounding mountains. You can take a day trip on a hiking tour to one of the island’s waterfalls, go ziplining through the trees, take an ATV adventure through the jungles, or even go tubing through the canals of an old sugar plantation. Staying in nearby Kalaheo or Lawai at a hotel such as Kalaheo Inn provides convenient access to the jungle and mountains north of the beaches. Or stay at one of the full-service beach resorts such as the Kiahuna Plantation Resort Kauai by Outrigger and take a day trip to an inland adventure.
