Driving in Ecuador is pleasant, thanks to its well-maintained roads. The following rules apply: you must always drive on the right-hand side of the road and wear your seatbelt. When you rent a car in Ecuador, you will always need to carry a valid driver’s license, registration, and insurance documents. You will find that the Pan-American Highway, which extends through 14 countries including Ecuador, is a toll road. Typical toll fees are as little as $1.

Drivers need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Ecuador. You must also hold a valid driver’s license from your home country. Any drivers under the age of 25 years old may incur a young drivers surcharge. You do not need an international driving license, just your domestic license and passport, to rent a car in the country. You will be able to drive for up to 30 days after your arrival in the country.

If you are driving in urban areas, you cannot travel above 50 km/h (31 mph), and on curvy roads, the maximum speed you can drive is 60 km/h (37 mph). On straight roads—mainly highways—the speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph).
