Although driving in Ivory Coast seems stressful, you can achieve a smooth driving experience quite easily. In Abidjan or any other city, maintain a space between you and the car ahead of you and look out for public transport drivers; they're notorious for not adhering to road regulations. You should also watch out for individuals by the roads, given that jaywalking is common. In this country, it's not uncommon for individuals to jump right in front of vehicles without warning, expecting not to be hit. Outside the cities, look out for animals and slow-moving vehicles.
You must be at least 21 to hire an Ivory Coast car rental. If you're younger than 25 years, you will have to part with more cash than older renters since most local rental agencies apply caution fees to young clients. Document-wise, you need a driver's license you've held for at least two years, a credit card in your name, and a passport. If your license isn't in English or French, you must accompany it with an International Driver's Permit.
Although Ivory Coast is one of the West African countries that produces crude oil, the cost of a gallon of oil here is relatively more than the cost of a gallon of oil in the USA. Here, a gallon goes for 3072 XOF (5.16 USD). At any of the fuel stations you’ll visit in the country, you’ll notice that fuel tanks are filled by attendants.
In Ivory Coast, roads have varying speed limits. You should not exceed 37.3 mph on urban roads, 68.4 mph on rural roads, and 74.6 mph on motorways. Across the country, speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour. Since speeding comes with strict penalties, maintaining the noted speed limits at all times will help you avoid unnecessary fines.
