Top tips for hiring a car in Isle of Anglesey

  • Anglesey is a large island in the Irish Sea and a popular tourist resort in Wales. You can reach it by driving across Menai Suspension Bridge and Britannia Bridge (or Pont Britannia), which link the island with the mainland of north Wales. A hire car is a great advantage here, as the biggest attractions are the diverse natural habitats on the island. You will want to reach the coastal walks and picturesque spots, the historic sites and the low lying hills that dot the landscape. There are trains and buses, but they tend to not go to all the tourist destinations and small locations that you will be seeking out. The roads are very good quality, but a larger car than the standard city car will make a trip to Anglesey much more enjoyable.
  • The entire island has a very rural atmosphere, and you will feel like you are stepping back in time as you drive around. The speed limits are the same as the rest of the UK, and everyone needs to wear a seatbelt or use a child seat in the car. Road signs are bilingual (in English and Welsh), and the entire island is 260 sq miles (673 sq km).
  • From the town of Holyhead, you can catch the car ferry to Dublin. The fastest crossing is around 2h on the so-called fast ferry, allowing you to go there and back in the same day, if need be. However, before you do so, make sure to check whether your car is covered to leave the UK. This is easily added on to your insurance policy, but your hire car firm will need to know in advance to apply it. There is a slower car ferry also, which takes about 3h 30min.
  • There are quite a few service stations on Anglesey. They are logically grouped around the entrance to the island, the one major road and Holyhead. There is a smaller number around the northern coast. If you plan to tour the interior and coast of Anglesey for the day, it’s worth checking their locations in advance.
  • Book your car hire in Isle of Anglesey at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Economy hire cars in Isle of Anglesey are around 24% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about hiring a car in Isle of Anglesey

  • Should I hire a car in Isle of Anglesey?

Many of the sites you will want to visit on Anglesey are out of the way and quite distant from each other, so you will need a car. It has some really important archaeological sites, like South Stack Hut Circles on Holy Island, a smaller island in the Irish sea, adjacent to Anglesey and the location of the town Holyhead. It’s connected to the larger island by a bridge. It comprises an iron-age settlement that is scattered along the base of Holyhead mountain and is hugely significant to historians. You’ll also need a car to drive along the small winding roads to the other side of Anglesey for Parys Mountain Roman Iron Mines. With its amazing natural colours, the crater of this former mountain is captivating. Other natural sites include the cliffs along the coastline, the caves and agris-tourism and lakes farther inland, making hiring a car a wise choice for the motivated traveller.

  • What is driving like in Isle of Anglesey?

The roads on Anglesey are good quality, and once you come off the main A55 to Holyhead, you will find they are much quieter with traffic, too. As you get closer to the coast, you will see the roads become narrower and more winding. A larger car would be ideal for these roads and give you much better visibility over high hedges, of which there are many. There are no toll roads on Anglesey.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in Isle of Anglesey?

The minimum age to hire a car in the UK varies between car hire companies, but it is usually either 21 or 23. Drivers under the age of 25 will generally incur a daily surcharge and be restricted to certain vehicle types. There is no maximum car hire age, but some companies will add a surcharge to anyone over 70, and those over 75 may be required to provide a letter from their doctor explaining they are fit to drive.

  • What is the most popular car hire in Isle of Anglesey?
